JOGOS! – A Board Game for Developing Legal Awareness

The JOGOS! board game is one of the key outcomes of E-mentoring’s “Creative Contemporary Communities in E-mentoring for Social Responsibility” project, implemented within the framework of the CERV (Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values), "Our Common Values" programme. The game introduces children’s rights, self-advocacy, and collaborative problem-solving in communities through a playful learning experience.

The aim of the JOGOS! board game
JOGOS! was created to allow young people to encounter everyday situations - within a safe and playful environment - where their rights may either be violated or properly respected. The game helps players recognize what constitutes a rights-violating situation, how to stand up for themselves and others, and how to exercise their fundamental rights responsibly.
Our goal was to create an accessible, community-building educational tool that is both entertaining and capable of making legal awareness tangible for students.

What is the game about?
JOGOS! is a print-and-play card game in which players step into the roles of residents of a large apartment building and encounter everyday situations that may or may not involve violations of rights. Students think together, discuss, and make decisions about which rights are affected in each scenario and what a responsible, rights-aware response might be. The humorous and relatable everyday stories help make legal concepts understandable and memorable.
A detailed teacher’s guide has also been created to accompany the game. This guide helps deepen the learning experience, supports follow-up discussions, and introduces students step by step to the most important legal concepts.

Implementation process
The development of JOGOS! took place from March 2025 until the end of 2025, following a carefully structured, multi-stage process. One of the unique aspects of the project is that the game was created by a development team of university students, who worked within a mentored creative process to design the concept. The team started from scratch: through collaborative brainstorming, they determined the themes, situations, and gameplay experience that the board game should include. Based on these ideas, they documented the core elements of the game in a Game Design Document (GDD), outlining the objectives, target group, core gameplay logic, and key decision points.
This was followed by the development of characters, gameplay mechanics, and detailed rules. The developers then created a prototype, which they first tested themselves in multiple rounds of iterative playtesting. Based on feedback and testing experiences, they refined the card texts, the balance between characters and situations, and the game rules, ensuring that the game remained smooth, understandable, and supportive of learning. The goal was to create a complete and easy-to-use educational package for teachers, together with the teacher’s guide.

The development team
Five university students participated in developing the game, coming from different fields: Amina Flóra Gulics, Mendel Jankovics, Eszter Keresztesi, Laura Márta Lőkös, and Zsófia Sándor-Dombay. With backgrounds in education, psychology, and media design, they collaboratively developed the game’s mechanics and content and later tested it with students to ensure that JOGOS! would be clear, enjoyable, and educational.
From the E-mentoring permanent staff, Lilla Lukács coordinated the process, while Zsófia Máthé supported the development with administrative work and creative ideas. The visual design of the game was created by Dorka Kovács, and the review of the legal terminology was carried out by Emese Hargita Vörös.

Where is it available?
JOGOS! is available as a free print-and-play game, meaning it can be easily downloaded and printed by schools, learning centers, and community groups, and integrated into their own programs. We have also prepared a printing guide to support easy use.
